Purpose/Mission Statement
To assist the presider in the distribution of the Eucharist to the assembly in order to maintain the unity (communion) of the moment. Extraordinary ministers are permitted when “the number of the faithful requesting Holy Communion is such that the celebration of the Mass or the distribution of the Eucharist outside Mass would be unduly prolonged.” (Instruction on Facilitating Sacramental Communion in Particular Circumstances)
Time/Talent Needs
You are qualified if you are: someone with a strong sense of reverence for the Lord’s table and the gifts of his Body and Blood; someone who cares deeply about the hungers and thirsts in the lives of others; someone who is able to offer the Eucharist with warmth, graciousness and dignity. Most of all, those who take on this ministry, must be individuals who know how to be truly present to others in the moment.
Qualifications
Candidates for this ministry must be practicing Catholics 16 years of age who have received the sacrament of Confirmation. Training for ministers of communion consists of an all day Saturday session focusing on the history of the Eucharist, the theology of the communion rite, and the “nuts and bolts” of the ministry.
Level of Commitment
Ministers are expected to serve when scheduled and get their own substitutes when necessary. They are also expected to attend community building evenings which include scripture reflection and camaraderie and ministry updates. Please note the following: in keeping with diocesan policy, Extraordinary Ministers are commissioned for a 3 year period. If both the pastor and minister are in agreement, the commissioning can be extended for a second three year period. At the end of these six years, the minister is required to take one year off, but may re-enter the ministry at the end of that year. Young people under the age of 18 are commissioned one year at a time.
